Book Log: Sparrow Jack (Birds)

Sparrowjack by Mordicai Gerstein

Sparrow Jack is the tale of Jack Bardsley who immigrates to America from England in the 1860s.  Shortly after his arrival he realizes the plight in America – Inch worms are eating every thing green and leafy, leaving behind nothing but devastation in  his new home town of Philadelphia. The native birds won’t eat the worms , so the townsfolk try picking them off the trees and bushes themselves but to no avail.

Jack, having raised a sparrow in England and knowing that they eat anything and everything, thinks that sparrows are the answer to the inchworm problem.  He returns to England to collect 1000 sparrows and bring them back to America.  This is that tale – the immigration of the house sparrow in 1868.
